Neng Yang, a junior majoring in history and Asian studies at California State University, Chico, has received a $4,000 Wang Family Scholarship to study in Taiwan during the 2011-2012 academic year

Yang is one of 10 students from the CSU system to receive the competitive scholarship for study in Taiwan. Ten more students received a similar scholarship for a year abroad in China.

According to application information for the scholarship, the Wang family provides the scholarships because of their belief in the importance of international education and the importance of preparing young people for a role in a rapidly changing international and interdependent world.

Yang will be studying at the National Taiwan University located in Taipei. Although Taiwanese citizens speak a mixture of Taiwanese dialect and Mandarin, she will be studying Mandarin. She said that the university is known for its rigorous Mandarin classes.

Yang will also learn about Taiwanese culture and visit as many historical sites as she is able. Although she emigrated from Thailand when she was 2 years old, she has never traveled outside of the United States.

“I was extremely happy when I received the letter of congratulations,” said Yang. “The Wang Family Scholarship is a stepping stone to help me achieve my goals. With this scholarship, I'll be able to see and experience the world outside of my comfort zone and challenge myself to my full potential.”
