A community kickoff event for the 2014-15 Book in Common will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, in the Chico City Plaza from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This year’s Book in Common, “The Distance Between Us,” by Reyna Grande, is a highly acclaimed memoir about the experience of migrants from Mexico to the United States.

Students at California State University, Chico and Butte College as well as other community members will read this year’s book during the 2014-15 academic year. The purpose of the Book in Common program is to promote discussion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community.

Speakers at the kickoff event will include Kimberly Perry, president of Butte College; Scott Gruendl, mayor of Chico; and Maureen Kirk, Butte County supervisor. Bill Loker, dean of Undergraduate Education at CSU, Chico, will be master of ceremonies.

Student readers will read brief passages from the book as part of the event, and music will be provided by Los Caballitos de la Cancion, a local Latin music band.

Tables will be set up during the event staffed by local organizations concerned with immigration issues and Mexican American life and culture. Copies of “The Distance Between Us” will be available for purchase.
