California State University, Chico English professor Kim Jaxon has received an award for teaching excellence from the California Association of Teachers in English (CATE).

CATE, an organization supporting California English teachers, has selected Jaxon for its prestigious Teacher of Excellence – College Award. The award is presented annually to one English professor in California and recognizes faculty who exemplify best teaching practices. Jaxon will be presented with the award at the organization’s annual convention in San Diego on Feb. 15.

Jaxon teaches upper-division courses in composition theory, first-year writing and English education. She uses a variety of technologies and digital platforms in her classroom. Her research interests focus on theories of literacy, specifically digital literacy; writing education; and teacher education. Her most recent research focuses on rescuing the concept of participation in the classroom.

A self-proclaimed geek and gamer, Jaxon is also the digital curator for the National Writing Project’s website, Digital Is…, which provides examples and support to educators with an interest in incorporating digital literacy and technology into their classes. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in English from CSU, Chico and a doctorate degree in education from UC Berkeley.

“The University and college are fortunate to have a pedagogical pioneer like Dr. Jaxon as a faculty member,” said College of Humanities and Fine Arts Dean Robert Knight. “Her forward thinking benefits students and has brought fresh perspectives to the table.”

“Kim is a well-deserving recipient because she has been not only a phenomenal teacher of writing and English education on campus, but also an invaluable contributor to the writing projects and teacher-preparation efforts across the North State,” said Department of English Chair Aiping Zhang.

CSU, Chico English Professor Emeritus Lois Bueler is a past recipient of the Teacher of Excellence – College Award.

At CATE’s preconvention on Feb. 13, CSU, Chico English professor Tom Fox will be a featured speaker for the California Writing Project, a subset of the National Writing Project aimed at improving writing and learning in the state’s schools. Awards for English teachers at the high school, middle school and elementary school levels will also presented at the conference.
