California State University, Chico's Associated Students Gender and Sexuality Equity Center (GSEC), CSU, Chico’s Transgender Task Force and Stonewall Alliance Center are hosting a series of events dedicated to Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) Nov. 16–20.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is a yearly national event on Nov. 20 to honor those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. It was created to honor Rita Hester, who was murdered on Nov. 28, 1998. Transgender people are people within the LGBTQ+ community who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth.

This year’s events honoring the transgender community include:

Trans Day of Remembrance Altar

Nov. 16–20 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. in the GSEC office (BMU 004)

  • There will be an altar in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to anti-trans violence. Anyone may come and pay their respects. An activity will be held in conjunction with the altar.

Panel and Reading of Stories

Nov. 17 from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at Butte College’s Culture & Community Center

  • Several hundred flags will be placed on the lawn by the library with a TDOR banner and event sign. A panel will speak and community-submitted stories will be shared.

“Screaming Queens” Film and Discussion

Nov. 18 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at Chico State in BMU 210

  • A documentary about transgender women and drag queens who fought against police brutality at Compton's Cafeteria in San Francisco in the 60s will be shown. A small group discussion following the film will allow everyone to have the opportunity to share their thoughts about the documentary.

“Say Their Names” Tabling and Wall Activity

Nov. 19 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Chico State’s Trinity Commons

  • People will have the opportunity to participate in an activity to commemorate those who have passed. The activity will consist of building a paper candle and having the option of reading a statistic or writing your own message.

Trans Stories and Panel Discussion

Nov. 19 from 6–7 p.m. at the UHUB at Chico State

  • This event focuses on reading stories about navigating life as a transgender person, followed by a panel focusing on transgender experiences. Food and warm beverages will be provided by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Memorial and Reading of Names

Nov. 20 from 6–8 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church of Chico (667 E 1st Ave Chico, CA)

  • A vigil and reading of names will be held to honor all the lives lost by anti-trans hatred and prejudice. This event gives allies a chance to stand in solidarity with the transgender community.
