More Events Planned in February Around “The Distance Between Us”

Reyna Grande, author of the 2014-15 Book in Common, “The Distance Between Us,” will reveal the inspiration for her memoir during a lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at California State University, Chico’s Laxson Auditorium.

In her book, Grande writes about her life before and after emigrating from Mexico to the United States. A National Book Circle Critics Award finalist, “The Distance Between Us” was hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “the ‘Angela’s Ashes’ of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.”

An accomplished author and memoirist, Grande has received an American Book Award, the El Premio Aztlán Literary Award and the Latino Book Award, among others, for her novels “Across a Hundred Mountains” (2006) and “Dancing with Butterflies” (2009).

Other events around the Book in Common are planned in February, including discussions on Tuesday, Feb. 10, and Tuesday, Feb. 17, each at 1 p.m. in the Gordon Room at Craig Hall, 1400 West 3rd Street in Chico.

In addition, an international forum led by Department of History Chair Stephen Lewis titled “Drugs, Disappearances, and Mass Graves: Mexico’s National Nightmare Comes to Reyna Grande’s Hometown of Iguala, Guerrero” will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m. in Ayres Hall 120.

A joint project between the University, Butte College, the City of Chico and Butte County, the Book in Common is a shared community read designed to promote discussion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community.

Past community reads include “The Soloist” by Steve Lopez; “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba; “Zeitoun” by Dave Eggers; “Unquenchable” by Robert Glennon; and “The Yellow Birds” by Kevin Powers.
