Local and regional faculty members are expected to participate in California State University, Chico’s 22nd annual Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Conference Oct. 6-7 at CSU, Chico.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Teaching and Learning in Today’s California.” The conference is presented by CELT, the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Division of Academic Affairs.

Highlighting the first day of the conference is the annual faculty awards luncheon, which this year features CSU, Chico President Gayle Hutchinson giving the keynote address. The luncheon is Thursday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium.

“We are very excited to have President Hutchinson deliver the keynote, discuss teaching and learning and share her vision of campus,” said Zach Justus, interim director of faculty development.

Other highlights include a presentation Oct. 7 on electronic portfolios by Kathleen Blake Yancey, the Kellogg W. Hunt Professor of English at Florida State University. Yancey is a national expert on composition and e-portfolios.

In addition, faculty from San Jose State will present a workshop Oct. 7 on the “flipped classroom,” where lecture material is viewed at home and exercises and projects are handled during class time.

“As faculty members we spend lots of our time teaching and learning, but not much time learning to do that more effectively,” said Justus, who is a faculty member in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences. “This is a chance for us to learn from colleagues on campus and beyond.”

Justus said CSU, Chico had more submissions than ever for workshops, with only a little more than one-third of those accepted for the conference. “We are building momentum to become a regional hub for teaching and learning,” he said.

The conference and luncheon are complimentary. Please note that the faculty awards luncheon and keynote and some conference events require advance registration. To see the complete schedule and to register, please visit the conference website at www.csuchico.edu/celt/index.shtml.
