About 1,500 elementary school students from the Chico Unified School District are coming to California State University, Chico to attend a free production of a children’s opera, “The Little Sweep,” on Jan. 18 and Jan. 19.

The show, a production of the University’s Department of Music and Theatre, will take place at the Harlen Adams Theatre. On Jan. 18, performances are at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. On Jan. 19, performances will take place at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The children’s opera, about a young chimney sweep, features CSU, Chico students and alumni, as well as the Children’s Choir of Chico.

“The funds to produce these events were made possible through an opera gala we hosted in September, with past CSU, Chico opera alumni coming back to perform at their alma mater,” said Department of Music and Theatre Chair Bradley Martin. The $7,500 raised through ticket sales and gifts covered the cost of the children’s production, including costumes, lighting, set scenery and an orchestra, he said.

“I know that this has been and will be a wonderful educational experience and treat for the students who are performing and for the elementary school children attending the performance,” Martin said.
