Outstanding Professor - Thomas Mattman
Professor Mattman joined the CSU, Chico faculty in 2000 directly after completing his PhD in mathematics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Mattman has published several articles, most of which are related to his main research interest, knot theory. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation and the Mathematical Association of America that allowed him to supervise research projects of undergraduates from Chico and around the country. As a result, he has eight papers with student co-authors published with two more currently under review.
Mattman has held visiting professorships at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Kyoto, Japan (2001), the University of British Columbia (2007), and Saitama University, near Tokyo, Japan (2008). In 2005, he was awarded a Professional Achievement Honor by CSU, Chico. He is the faculty advisor to the Math Club and the CSU, Chico chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon. He is also a co-mentor to the CSU, Chico team for the Putnam Math Competition. In addition to running the weekly Math Colloquium, Mattman is organizer of the biennial Chico Topology Conference.
