Where
are we: The museum gallery is located on the mezzanine floor of the historic
Laxson Auditorium, 1st and Salem Streets. Additional prints are also on display
in the Ayres Hall first floor cases, which is located directly behind the
auditorium.
About the museum
The museum was established in 1981 with an initial generous gift of over 2,000
prints from the late CSU, Chico faculty member Dr. Janet Turner. Turner, an
internationally known printmaker and educator, felt students should have the
opportunity to learn from and be inspired by original art.
The Print Museum is a program in
the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and has strong links to the Department
of Art and Art History. Additional support come from its university/community
based Board of Directors. A Summer Art Academy is one of the newer
institutional program collaborations. Donations are tax deductible and gratefully
received.
The museum's curated exhibitions
from the collection serve the campus and surrounding communities and are open
at no charge. In addition to collection exhibitions the Friends of the Turner
sponsor a national biennial print competition and exhibition and current student
work is celebrated in a juried exhibition at the end of the spring semester
The museum has an active Intern Program for those wishing to add to their museum studies experience and as a print study center for classes and individuals. Exhibitions from the collection are also created as a collaboration between the museum and specific art classes.

EXHIBITION SCHEDULE 2005 - 2006
August 25 -September 17, 2005 "Open Drawers: The Luxury of a Collection"
Open any drawer containing the Janet Turner Print Collection and expect to find a variety of artistic images to amaze you! This is the viewers’ chance to have the same experience as the Curator--what she found in just a few storage drawers goes on the wall.
September 26-October 30, 2005 "Due South: Latin American Prints”
Dr. Matthew Looper’s Latin American Art class spent spring, 2005 researching this exhibition of prints from the collection. Students enjoyed a hands on first person experience with the JTPM collection prints they chose to research and interpret.
November 7-December 14, 2005 "Tradition/Innovation: Ukiyo-e, Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga Japanese Prints"
A year-long research project lead by Dr. Yoshio Kusaba identified and researched a part of the JTPM’s Japanese print holdings. This exhibition is in conjunction with the University and College of HFA’s sponsorship of Japanese Manga: The Power of Girls’ Comics.
February 2-28, 2006 "6th Janet Turner National Print Competition and Exhibition"
Deborah Cornell, Head of Printmaking at Boston University acted as juror for this highly anticipated event. Outstanding prints from across the nation will be on display in the JTPM Gallery, University Art Gallery and the 1078 Gallery on 5th Street. This exhibition will include a Juror’s lecture, demonstrations and awards reception. Call the Museum office, 898-4476 for specific dates and times.
March 20-April 16, 2006 "Speak to Me: Student Printmakers as Curators”
Student printmakers are familiar with the JTPM collection by their study visits lead by printmaking instructor Eileen Macdonald. For this exhibition she will lead them to a deeper examination of artistic intent as they chose specific prints to form an exhibition.
April 24-May 16, 2006 "10th Annual Student Printmakers' Invitational" and “3rd ink/Clay”
This exhibition always generates excitement as an overview to what students have been doing in printmaking over the past year. An outside juror select what they feel to be the strongest work done in an academic year, and several prints to be added to the JTPM’s Student Collection, a tradition the late Dr. Turner started herself. Advanced CSU, Chico ceramic students will also be featured in “ink/Clay.”
Most exhibitions also use the Ayres Hall first floor cases.
Closed Thanksgiving week; December 15-January 23, and spring semester break, March 13-17.
