The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies

Total Course Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree: 120-124 units

See “Requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree” in The University Catalog for complete details on general degree requirements. A minimum of 40 units, including those required for the major, must be upper division.

The department has prepared a suggested Four Year Advising Plan to help students meet all graduation requirements within four years. Please request a plan from your major adviser or view it and other current advising information on the CSU, Chico Web.

General Education Requirements: 48 units

The General Education requirements for the Liberal Studies major are unique. By completing the Liberal Studies major, students also satisfy General Education requirements. Partial completion of the major may or may not satisfy completion of these requirements. Courses required for the major that are marked below with an asterisk (*) may be applied toward General Education by students changing to another major program.

Cultural Diversity Course Requirements: 6 units

See “Cultural Diversity” in The University Catalog. Most courses used to satisfy these requirements may also apply to General Education.

For Liberal Studies majors in the General pattern, these requirements are met by successfully completing Social Science (SOSC) 102 and 103. For students in the Bilingual (Spanish) pattern, these requirements are met by successfully completing Chicano Studies (CHST) 158 or Sociology (SOCI) 158 and Social Science (SOSC) 103 or ASST 100.

American Institutions Requirement: 6 units

See the “American Institutions Requirement” in The University Catalog. Liberal Studies majors must take HIST 050 and POLS 055, which apply toward the General Education requirement.

Literacy Requirement:

See “Mathematics and Writing Requirements” in The University Catalog. Writing proficiency in the major is a graduation requirement and may be demonstrated through satisfactory completion of a course in your major which has been designated as the Writing Proficiency (WP) course for the semester in which you take the course. Students who earn below a C- are required to repeat the course and earn a C- or better to receive WP credit. See The Class Schedule for the designated WP courses for each semester. You must pass ENGL 001 (or its equivalent) with a C- or better before you may register for a WP course.

Course Requirements for the Major: 105-124 units

The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this degree. Additional required courses, dependent upon a selected option or advising pattern, are outlined following the degree core program requirements.

General (pre-credential) Pattern: 106-109 units

Bilingual (Spanish/Latino pre-credential) Pattern: 119 units

PUBLIC SCHOOL EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Forty-five hours of Public School experience required for entrance into CSU, Chico’s Professional Education Program. Please see adviser. Students who plan to continue work toward the BCLAD credential also need SPED 143.

LIBERAL ARTS PATTERN (non-credential): 30-49 units

This pattern is designed for students who want a broad liberal arts and science degree but are not interested in pursuing the teaching credential. Public school experience is not required for the non-credential pattern. It is important to see an adviser for help in planning your program. Normally, students selecting this pattern complete the following program: The liberal studies lower-and upper-division degree core program of 75 units; 12-14 units in an Area of Concentration; and 18 units or more for a minor. Students who select a second major of 30 units or more will fulfill the Area of Concentration requirements as well as the Professional Prerequisites.

Electives Requirement:

To complete the total units required for the bachelor’s degree, select additional elective courses from the total university offerings. You should consult with an adviser regarding the selection of courses which will provide breadth to your university experience and apply to a supportive second major or minor.

Students should also check with their adviser on applying elective courses to requirements for supplementary authorizations, which will permit teaching in grades 7 through 9 in a departmentalized setting. See the Education section for a description of Supplementary Authorizations.

Students working toward a credential may use Basic Professional Education courses as elective units toward the Liberal Studies degree.

Advising Requirement:

Advising is mandatory for all majors in this degree program.
