The Romanian Orphans
I first became interested in this topic when I saw parts of The Heart of Darkness.  The graphic images I saw stuck with me and left me asking a lot of questions. How did this happen? Why did this happen? What is going to happen to these kids?  I am now pursuing a degree in Psychology with the hopes of working as a youth councilor in American orphanages. I have to wonder if these children will ever be able to overcome their problems resulting from their time spent in the orphanages.  I chose this topic because I believe that everyone should get an equal chance in life, and not knowing  why these children didn’t bothered me.  I find it interesting from a sociological point to see what the Romanian situation says about people everywhere and what it says about us.  Most people don't know about this topic because Romania is "over there" and we're "over here."  If we think an ocean can save us from the problems that Romania is facing now or that it somehow will solve itself, we are fooling ourselves.  The situation in Romania is a world wide problem that is going to take a lot of work to fix.  There is no solution section in this site because I couldn't even begin to propose one.  I hope this site makes you think about the world, and our place as Americans within it.  The number of American charity groups in Romania is rising, but we should ask ourselves if we are truly doing enough.
