Tracy Butts

Dean of HFA; African American, American, and Multicultural Literature.

I earned my BA and MA from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. I teach courses in American, African American, and American Multicultural literature. My research interests include black women writers and Hip Hop. I especially like establishing connections between issues and ideas in 18th and 19th century works of African American literature and Hip Hop. I recently taught a women writers class that set Beyonce's Lemonade in conversation with black women writers (Harriet Jacobs, Zora Neale Hurston, Ntozake Shange, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Gloria Naylor).
