Concerned Philosophers for Peace
10th Annual Conference

The 10th Annual Conference of Concerned Philosophers for Peace will be held at California State University, Chico on September 25, 26, 27, and 28, 1997. The conference theme will be "Reconciling Peace with Justice." The keynote speaker on September 25 will be Michael Lerner, editor of the progressive magazine TIKKUN.

Michael Lerner - Keynote Speaker


Michael Lerner, author of numerous books and essays detailing the predicament of ordinary individuals in our culture, is editor of TIKKUN magazine and a recently-ordained rabbi. He has been called by Cornel West, with whom he co-authored a book-length reflection Blacks and Jews, "one of the major prophetic figures of our time." His recently published POLITICS OF MEANING (click here for review) has been lauded as a significant contribution to the public discussion of contemporary issues.

Call for Papers

Papers can address a variety of topics and questions:

Aiming at the ideal
Solving problems both peacefully and justly
Are various forms of justice achievable simultaneously?
Negative versus positive peace
What to do when peace affirms an unjust status quo?
When should the U.S. engage in/refrain from foreign intervention and foreign aid?
Is just war the best compromise we can work toward in practice?
Deconstructing discourses about peace and justice
Splitting the self/cognitive dissonance between ideals and realities
Balancing/promoting interethnic cooperation with preserving ethnic identity
Democracy as process and/or content

Papers are refereed and Concerned Philosophers for Peace will make every effort to publish most of the essays accepted for the conference in the Philosophy of Peace section of the Value Inquiry book series of Rodopi Press.

Two copies of papers and a 150-word abstract (hard copy, please) should be received by July 18, 1997. Please send all materials and inquiries to conference host:
