August 19, 2023 – Information About Last Night’s Gun Violence Near Campus

Dear Campus Community,

Gun violence has once again impacted our campus community. Early this morning, in the neighborhood south of campus, two people were shot and transported to the hospital with, thankfully, what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. While neither victim is a Chico State student, it is still very concerning to learn about this violence in a neighborhood where many of our students live.

As of this morning, no arrests have been made. University Police have been in contact with Chico PD, which is investigating the case and following up on leads.

It frustrates and saddens me that gun violence has once again touched our community, especially on the first weekend after so many students just came back to town. Gun violence is not unique to Chico, but we cannot, as a collective, watch these incidents occur and do nothing.

To assist students who need emotional support, WellCat Counseling will offer drop-in hours on Monday and Tuesday from 9 am – 4 pm. Students can also contact the WellCat Counseling Center by calling 530-898-6345 or emailing counselingcenter@csuchico.edu.

As a University, we must continue to educate students about taking care of themselves and those around them, using good judgment after-hours, deescalating situations before they reach the point of violence, and what they should do if they end up in a dangerous situation.

We will continue to work with City of Chico officials and landlords on additional safety measures for the neighborhoods where this and other incidents have occurred. Throughout the first few weeks of the semester, I will update the campus on our efforts.

Thank you,
Steve Perez
