Musical Theatre Coordinator

Matthew Teague Miller is an Associate Professor of Theatre, Program Coordinator for the Musical Theatre BFA, and Associate Chair of the Department of Music and Theatre.  He received his BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), and MFA in Directing from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.  Currently Matthew serves as President of Musical Theatre Educators Alliance(opens in new window), the largest international organization for Musical Theatre teachers.  Matthew also serves as co-host of the popular Musical Theatre Educator’s podcast Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau. (opens in new window) He is a frequent contributor to the popular theatre website onstageblog.com, where he published the popular articles A Professor’s Recipe to Electric Musical Theatre Stage Presence(opens in new window) and What is a Theatre Critic’s Actual Job?(opens in new window) both of which have been adopted by Theatre Professors around the country as required readings.

Matthew is a Member of Actors’ Equity Association and has appeared as Oscar in The Odd Couple, Marcellus in The Music Man, Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and many others.  Additionally, Matthew spent three years touring with the Broadway production Les Miserables, and was a member of the original China cast opposite Tony Nominees Colm Wilkinson and Carmen Cusack . 

As a Director, Matthew’s work has been seen at Timber Lake Playhouse, Triad Stage Upstage Cabaret, and the George Street Playhouse.  In addition, he spent five years as Producing Artistic Director of Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, an Equity Theatre company in Iowa.  At the Showboat, Matthew directed the Iowa premieres of Disney’s Newsies and The Bridges of Madison County, along with many other productions.

On the Chico State campus Matthew has been a University Senator since 2017.  He has also served on the University Diversity Council, Vice-Chair of EPPC, Vice-Chair of FASP, and Theatre Division Head.

Matthew was the proud recipient of the 2022 “Taking it to the Classroom” Conversations on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) Award(opens in new window) for his commitment to Anti-Racist Theatre Practices and Social Justice in theatre.

Of all the roles he is most proud, none are more important and fulfilling as the role of “Dada” to Mattingly and Eddie James, and “Husband” to Jami.
