The Department of Art and Art History, California State University, Chico, scholarship competition takes place during the spring semester each academic year. Scholarships are awarded during the spring for implementation the following academic year.

    Application Process

    1. Submit the Wildcat Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office. The scholarship application will close February 15th, 2024 - Letters of Recommendation due by the 20th.
    2. Submit your Art Department Scholarship to the Art Department by March 8th, 2024 by 5pm. Your application should have the following items:
      1. A portfolio of images submitted as .jpg files.
        1. The portfolio must consist of a minimum of ten (10) .jpgs of work executed within the last two years. Eight (8) of the ten .jpgs must be full views of eight different pieces. Two (2) of the ten .jpgs may show a detail view of two of the works depicted in full frame. After meeting this basic requirement, you may elect to include five (5) additional .jpgs of other work to the portfolio. Thus, the maximum number of .jpgs permitted in your submission is fifteen (15).
        2. The .jpgs are to demonstrate a discernible pattern of creative and conceptual growth in your studio work. Professionalism should be stressed in both the content of the work and the quality of the .jpgs. All .jpgs must conform to the  labeling requirements contained in this prospectus.
          NOTE: If applying for the printmaking or watermedia scholarships, a majority of works represented by the portfolio must be executed in these media.
      2. A list of images (.jpgs) submitted. The list must be numerically ordered and conform in format to the example at the bottom of the page.
      3. The Art Department Scholarship Application Form (PDF). If more space is requires, attach additional pages conforming of the application format.

        1. Currently enrolled students submit an unofficial California State University, Chico transcript.
        2. Entering transfer students submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.

    CD/Flash Drive Portfolio Requirements

    1. All images must be .jpg files under 500k.
    2. Each .jpg file must indicate a number in the title which corresponds to the number given on the list of images required in your application.
    3. Your name should be printed clearly on the CD or Flash Drive with an indelible marking pen.
    4. The CD or Flash Drive must be submitted in a protective sleeve (or cap if Flash Drive) with your name on it

    Application Process

    1. Submit the Wildcat Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office. The scholarship application submission window will close by February 15th, 2024.
    2. Submit your Art Department Scholarship to the Art Department by March 8th, 2024 at 5pm. Your application should have the following items:
      1. A dossier which must include three examples demonstrating your ability to write effectively about art history. These writings may come from a variety of sources, such as term papers, essays, journal entries, and articles in publications. This qualifies as the "portfolio" for Art History students.
      2. The Art Department Scholarship Application Form (PDF). If more space is requires, attach additional pages conforming of the application format.
      3. A short summary which indicates your past achievements such as honors and grants received (specify year and grant amount), research projects, articles published or in process.
      4. Transcript(s)
        1. Currently enrolled students submit an unofficial California State University, Chico transcript.
        2. Entering transfer students submit official transcripts from all colleges attended.

    Application Process

    1. Submit the Wildcat Scholarship Application to the Financial Aid & Scholarship Office. The scholarship application is now open! The window will close February 15th, 2024.
    2. Submit your Art Department Scholarship to the Art Department via physical USB storage device to the Art Office (Ayres 107) on or before March 8th, 2024 by 5:00pm. Your application should have the following items: 
      1. A two-page essay (typed) describing your career goals and objectives.
      2. A portfolio of images submitted as a CD of .jpg files.
        The portfolio must consist of a minimum of ten (10) .jpgs of work executed within the last two years. Eight (8) of the ten .jpgs must be full views of eight different pieces. Two (2) of the ten .jpgs may show a detail view of two of the works depicted in full frame. After meeting this basic requirement, you may elect to include five (5) additional .jpgs of other work to the portfolio.     NOTE: For the ASID Student Chapter Scholarship the applicant must be an active member of ASID, and have at least an overall GPA of 2.5 with a 3.0 in ART. For the Florence Ritchie Scholarship applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.0. Both scholarships require the applicant to have Junior or Senior class standing.

Digital Portfolio Requirements

When turning in your digital portfolio, please choose from one of these 3 options:

  1. Google Drive Folder: include the shareable link in the email with your Application.

  2. PDF File: Attach or link a singular compressed PDF file with the images separated onto the pages in your email with other application materials.

  3. Flashdrive: Upload full resolution Images to any USB digital storage device and turn into the Art Department Office; Ayres 107 before 5:00pm Friday March 8th.

  • 15 - 20 images
  • Only .jpeg files. (no .HEIC)
  • All .jpeg files should be between 1-2 MB
  • All files to be titled, with year and medium of each piece

      • If no students meet the criteria in an award cycle, the pool of applicants may be opened to students in any focus in the Art Studio Major.

      • Major Option: Art (Art Studio or Art Studio BFA)

      • Enrollment status: Continuing
      • Class level: JR, SR
      • Recipient must be pursuing a BA or BFA in Art Studio

    • Pierce/Trucksess Studio Art 
      • Must be BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art) or MFA (Masters of Fine Art)
      • Class Level: Sophomore, junior, senior or graduate

      • 1st preference:
        • Demonstrated interest in watermedia, including transparent or gouache watercolor, acrylic, casein, printmaking, and other mixed media on paper support that includes watermedia prominently.
      • 2nd preference:
        • Demonstrated interest in painting and drawing in all media.
      • If no eligible applicants meeting first two preferences:
        • Demonstrated interest in any area of art studio as long as they evidence a foundational ability in creative processes and a sincere interest in pursuing a career in art.
      • * In the case of equally eligible candidates, preference is for the student with greater financial need.
