Who
participates in LSAMP?
The
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation targets underrepresented
minority students who are excited by the prospect of contributing
to the fields of science, engineering, or mathematics. Applicants
must be enrolled as full time students at California State University,
Chico or neighboring Butte Community College in in the upcoming fall
semester. Our target ethnic group are: Latino, African American, American
Indian, Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islander. Applicants must
have declared a major in science, engineering, or mathematics.
All applicants must be eligible to take precalculus or calculus
in the fall semester.
Students in the AMP program meet peers,
faculty, and industry representatives with similar interests. They
will explore a variety of careers in science, engineering, and mathematics,
and improve their problem solving abilities. We are funded by the
National Science Foundation and the California State University system
to create pathways to success for our participants.
Benefits
and Responsibilities
Summer Calculus Boot Camp
Receive a stipend of $600, a new graphing calculator, and other supplies
upon successful completion.
This four-week
institute will focus on problem-solving, explorations, and real world
applications of precalculus mathematics incorporating the calculator.
Graphs, Rational Expressions, Exponents and Radicals, Linear Equations
and Inequalities, Absolute Value, Polynomials, Trigonometry, Logarithms,
and Exponentials are the topics which will be covered.
Fall and Spring Semesters
Enroll
in pre calculus and/or calculus courses. Enroll in weekly workshops
which focus on pre calculus and calculus enrichment. Other workshops
will be available in physics, chemistry, computer science, and/or biology.
