What is SME?

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is the world's leading professional society supporting lifelong manufacturing education. Through its member programs, publications, expositions and professional development resources, SME promotes an increased awareness of manufacturing engineering and helps keep manufacturing professionals up to date on leading trends and technologies. Headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, SME has members in 70 countries and is supported by a network of hundreds of chapters worldwide.

What does the student chapter do?

The student chapter of SME sponsors field trips, guest speakers, and annually enters the WESTEC Manufacturing Challenge, an open-ended, creative engineering competition which is held at the WESTEC Advanced Productivity Exposition in the Los Angeles Convention Center each spring. WESTEC is North America's largest metalworking and manufacturing event. The annual competition is sponsored by SME and attracts students from universities in the western United States.
