Notes from LMS II Meeting

January 13, 2005

·        Hire vendors for installation and deployment (Bill P)

Bill E. presented timeline, rubric criteria, vendor format and “Solutions Objective”

Goal is to find the solution “match” for Chico environment

Scenario-based solutions discussed

Remember that Blackboard has its own portal

·        PeopleSoft is a must!

·        U Portal is a must (?)

Looking for simple – bullet point recommendations (Bill P)

Committee needs to fully understand our solution objectives from which to evaluate.

How deep of a rubric? How many criteria are required?

·        Learning outcomes (students)

·        Manage classes (save time for faculty)

·        SCORM compliant

·        Reporting capabilities

·        Runs reliably every day

·        Grading integration with campus

Gartner analysis at a committee meeting is possible.

Open source (is that for the future?)

CIOs have to take a lead in the LMS decisions (Bill P)

CSU are not close to choosing a single source contract yet

Cal Poly Sakai and uPortal (working on it)

Remember vendors can disappear in a couple years.

Timeline reviewed

·        Announce to campus (TLP flyer next week)

·        January 28th first committee meeting

·        Kim will help support Bill and Laura with meetings/schedules/email

uPortal will be up and running by March 15th

Evaluation Process

(Macro Level)

·        Campus involvement/engagement

·        Establish strategic objectives

·        Develop scenario for each option

·        Develop rubric to analyze scenarios against strategic objectives

·        Recommend best scenario for Chico (most likely to succeed)

Summary

We want our next LMS to improve learning outcomes; provide better class management tools for faculty; improve assessment tools for campus; be reliable and sustainable.

Rubric

1.      Learning outcomes -  teaching and managing courses

2.      Program management and support (training, app. Support, etc)

3.      Enterprise support

4.      Institutional and programmatic assessment

Information Gathering

·        Research

·        Vendor visits

·        Input from campus (individual experience and pilots)

Survey – feedback for our committee to review. Create survey questions for folks to fill out when vendors are here, for our collection only (not for vendors).
