The Certificate in Literary Editing and Publishing

This certificate provides training in editing, copyediting, selection procedures and standards, publishing procedures, graphics, printing technologies, and marketing and distributing literature.

Course Requirements for the Certificate: 23-24 units

The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this certificate.

4 courses required:

CDES    023    Visual Communication Concepts    2.0    FS

CDES    080    Survey of Print Publishing    2.0    FS

ENGL    275    Editing for Publication    3.0    SP

Prerequisites: ENGL 124 or ENGL 175 (may be taken concurrently).

ENGL    289    Internship In English    1.0-3.0    FS

ENGL 289 must be taken for 3 units.

1 course selected from:

ENGL    220E    Chapbook Production    4.0    SP

Prerequisites: ENGL 296 or two 200-level courses from the Minor in Creative Writing; or ENGL 320 and ENGL 321.

ENGL    320E    Chapbook Production    4.0    SP

Prerequisites: ENGL 296; or two 200-level courses from the Minor in Creative Writing; or ENGL 320 and ENGL 321.

1 course selected from:

ENGL    196    Intro Literary Edit/Publish    4.0    SP

ENGL    296    Literary Editing    4.0    FA

Prerequisites: ENGL 020 (may be taken concurrently).

2 courses selected from:

CDES    133A    Typography I    3.0    FS

Prerequisites: CDES 029V, CDES 186A.

CDES    183    Print Materials    2.0    FS

Prerequisites: CDES 080.

CDES    186A    Digital Pre-publishing I    3.0    FS

Prerequisites: CDES 010, CDES 080, or faculty permission.

CDES    221    Publication Design    3.0    FA

Prerequisites: CDES 132, CDES 133A.

MGMT    180    Managing People, Bus Proc, & Chg    3.0    FS

NOTE: English majors who may have taken any of the above English courses in pursuit of their major may substitute additional optional courses from above in consultation with the certificate adviser; other majors may substitute 3-4 units of upper-division English courses for any of the above non-English electives in consultation with the adviser.

A GPA of 2.5 is required for all courses taken for the certificate.
