Arley L. Howsden, EdD

Dr. Howsden brought many years of Midwest public school teaching, coaching, and international teaching experience when he came to California State University, Chico in 1958. He was founding dean of the College of Education for 13 years and chaired the Butte County Board of Supervisors in the mid-1950's. 

On campus he directed the behavioral studies center and oversaw students teaching youngsters and adults at the Gridley Labor Camp to improve their knowledge and self-esteem. Dr. Howsden was associated with Mini-Corps, Peace Corps, and was a UNESCO appointed consultant to the University of Khartoum in Sudan.

He was a campus representative to the Butte County Economic Opportunity Council, and president of the statewide faculty association, local retired employees association, Durham Rotary Club, Chico Democratic Club, and Chico Toastmasters (also district governor), chaired the Salvation Army, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Chico Y's Men's Club. He was a director of the Chico Council of Churches and a three-time delegate to Democratic national conventions.
