Dr. Carol Burr helped develop the Women's Studies minor in 1974 and oversaw the development of the Women’s Studies major while directing the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies (1995-2004). She chaired the English Department from 1985 to 1994.

Burr also helped develop the University Honors Program, first in General Education and then in the major. She also developed and directed “Conversations on Diversity,” a program that continues today through the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Her efforts led to a scholarship program for first-generation students majoring in English.

She illustrated The Birds of Bidwell Park (2010) and co-authored Latin for Bird Lovers (2014). Her teaching specialties included Victorian novels and composition. Her publications include “Unstill Lives: Portraits of Northern California Women” and “The Use of Story in Women’s Novels of the 1970s.” Burr accumulated more than 10 grants with some supporting the English computer lab, the honors program, and a workshop on multicultural education.

She received a campus Meritorious Performance Award (1984), Outstanding Faculty Service Award (1992), Women of Distinction Award from Soroptimist International (1999), and for “outstanding community support for women’s health specialists” (2006). She was co-chair of the state university system’s Women Council (1986-1990) and her community service endeavors include being a leader for the Butte County League of Women Voters.
