January 30, 2018 – Campus Safety Updates and Information

As we start a new semester, I want to take a moment to update you on recent measures we are taking to increase campus safety and well-being, which are and always will be our top priorities. Campus administration works closely with the University Police Department and Chico Police Department to monitor and enhance the security of our campus, and I want everyone to be aware of these practices, especially new students, faculty, and staff.  
 
We’ve been working to increase visibility in our riparian corridor and within the campus arboretum, clearing brush, checking lighting, and increasing patrols. We’re also making infrastructure improvements and increasing routine patrols by University Police officers to deter and address problems as they arise.
 
Improvements also have been made to Chico State Alerts, the emergency notification system we use to communicate potential threats. Communications are available via phone message, text or email, or a combination of these. Please check the Chico State Alerts site to make sure you are registered with your preferred method of communication and best contact number. If you are not registered, I urge you to do so. The City of Chico and Butte County also operate emergency notification systems, which complement but do not replace registration in Chico State Alerts. You can enroll in those systems here.
 
These, and numerous other efforts, help us protect our campus community and prepare us to respond to emergencies of all types. Additionally, we have resources available to support your knowledge and preparedness.  

• The Health and Safety website includes information on personal safety awareness, campuswide safety, campus safety programs, as well as instructions on reporting a crime or threat.
• The Emergency Preparation webpage features information on blue light phones, evacuation guidelines, and preparedness training, including one for an active shooter scenario.

 
We all play a role in creating a safe and caring environment. If you see something inappropriate or dangerous, take action when safe to do so, and report the activity to the appropriate officials. If you ever have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact University Police at 530-898-5555.
