October 16, 2017 – Milton Lang Selected as Vice President for Student Affairs
To: Campus Community
From: President Gayle E. Hutchinson
I am delighted to announce that Dr. Milton Lang has been selected as the Vice President for Student Affairs after a nationwide search. Dr. Lang will begin his position on January 16, 2018.
Dr. Lang comes to California State University, Chico from University of California, Davis, where he has served since August 2013 as the associate vice chancellor, Student Life, Campus Community and Retention Services in the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs. In this role, he had oversight of services such as the Student Community Center, Cross-Cultural Center, Student Recruitment and Retention, Associated Students, and Student Support and Judicial Affairs. He also managed strategic retention initiatives for African American, Chicano/Latino, Native American, and Middle East/South Asian students.
Prior to his work at UC Davis, Dr. Lang was senior associate vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment and senior associate vice president for the Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.
Dr. Lang has an EdD in Higher Education Administration and a master’s degree in Education from Washington State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from California State University, Chico.
“Dr. Lang possesses a deep understanding of CSU, Chico and the Chico community from his days as an active and engaged undergraduate student,” said Dr. Charles Zartman, chair of the search committee. “He has built on those experiences through successful graduate studies and two decades of increasing student affairs administrative responsibilities at two other campuses. Those who encounter him will quickly find an enthusiastic, perceptive, caring, prepared, and forward-thinking student affairs leader who also remains very much committed to bringing the best out of others in his every interaction.”
Dr. Lang would like to share these comments with the campus: “It is a true honor and I am very humbled to be selected as the next Vice President for Student Affairs at a university that has given so much to me. To have the opportunity to join President Hutchinson, her leadership team, the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of this great university is the highlight of my career. As proud alumni, my wife Janel and I are excited to once again be a part of the Chico State family.”
In closing, I would like to acknowledge the work of the search committee (listed below). I am deeply grateful for their professionalism and dedication in the search for our new Vice President for Student Affairs. I also want to thank faculty, staff, and students who participated in the campus visits and provided feedback to the committee.
Please join me in welcoming and congratulating Dr. Lang.
