Do I Need ALEKS PPL?

Math in Your ECC Major

Determine if you need ALEKS PPL by reviewing the categories and information below.

Reminder, at the time of admission, multiple measures are used to determine preparedness for MATH courses. This measure may not reflect your true understanding or ability to learn math or calculus concepts for your ECC major. In an effort to properly advise, reduce frustration, and set you up for success, it is strongly encouraged to complete the ALEKS PPL assessment (if applicable).

  • Incoming ECC International Students

All new international undergraduate students must enroll in MATH in their first semester (unless exempt or already completed college-level MATH course). In order to appropriately place you in MATH, you will also need to complete the ALEKS PPL assessment for accurate placement. Visit the MATH Department website more information about ALEKS PPL for incoming international students.

  • Incoming ECC Transfer Students

If you have completed a transferrable MATH course (GE Area B4) but, have not completed a transferrable precalculus or calculus for your major, you are encouraged to complete ALEKS PPL to assess your calculus readiness.

View the MATH course requirements needed for your specific major below to determine if you should complete ALEKS PPL.

  • Advanced Manufacturing & Applied Robotics (AMAR)

Incoming first-year AMAR students that do not have college credit for MATH 119 Precalculus or MATH 118 Trigonometry (or transfer equivalents) should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.

Students who have taken the AP Calculus AB or BC exam but do not have scores by June 10 are advised to still take the ALEKS PPL assessment to determine MATH placement and enrollment during Orientation.

Transfer AMAR students who have already completed transfer equivalents for precalculus do not need ALEKS. If you have not completed college-level precalculus or Trigonometry, then you can use ALEKS to assess placement into MATH 119.

MATH required in the AMAR major: MATH 119 and MATH 105

  • Computer Animation & Game Development (CAGD)

For all CAGD options, completion of any college-level math course (GE Area B4) with a C- or better is the only math course needed.

However, first-year students are advised to take their GE Area B4 in the first semester in order to plan for CAGD 180 in the second semester. If your MATH placement suggests enrolling in B1/B2 Science with MATH 031, it is recommended to complete ALEKS PPL.

MATH required in the CAGD major: GE B4 Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning

  • Computer Information Systems (CINS)

Incoming first-year CINS students that do not have college credit for MATH 109 Survey of Calculus or MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I (or transfer equivalents) or MATH 119 precalculus should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.

Students who have taken the AP Calculus AB or BC exam but do not have scores by June 10 are advised to still take the ALEKS PPL assessment to determine MATH placement and enrollment during Orientation.

Transfer CINS students who have already completed transfer equivalents for Survey of Calculus or Calculus I do not need ALEKS PPL. If you have not completed college-level precalculus or  trigonometry then you can use ALEKS PPL to assess placement into calculus. *See the ALEKS PPL Results & Major Advising for statistics or calculus route options.

MATH required in the CINS major: MATH 105, MATH 217, MATH 109 or 120 or 314

  • Computer Science (CSCI)

Incoming first-year CSCI students that do not have college credit for MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I (or transfer equivalents) or MATH 119 Precalculus should complete an ALEKS assessment.

Students who have taken the AP Calculus AB or BC exam but do not have scores by June 10 are advised to still take the ALEKS PPL assessment to determine MATH placement and enrollment during Orientation.

Transfer CSCI students who have already completed transfer equivalents for Calculus I do not need ALEKS PPL. If you have not completed college-level precalculus or trigonometry then you can use ALEKS PPL to assess placement into calculus.

MATH required in the CSCI major: MATH 120, 121, 217, and 314

  • Concrete Industry Management (CIMT)

Incoming first-year CIMT students that do not have college credit for MATH 119 Precalculus or MATH 118 Trigonometry (or transfer equivalents) should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.

Students who have taken the AP Calculus AB or BC exam but do not have scores by June 10 are advised to still take the ALEKS PPL assessment to determine MATH placement and enrollment during Orientation.

Transfer CIMT students who have already completed transfer equivalents for precalculus do not need ALEKS PPL. If you have not completed college-level precalculus or trigonometry then you should use ALEKS PPL to assess placement into precalculus.

MATH required in the CIMT major: MATH 119 and MATH 105

  • Construction Management (CMGT)

Incoming first-year CINS students that do not have college credit for MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I (or transfer equivalent) or MATH 119 precalculus should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.

Students who have taken the AP Calculus AB or BC exam but do not have scores by June 10 are advised to still take the ALEKS PPL assessment to determine MATH placement and enrollment during Orientation.

Transfer CMGT students who have already completed transfer equivalents of MATH 109 Survey of Calculus or MATH 120 Calculus I do not need ALEKS PPL. If you have not completed college-level precalculus then you should use ALEKS PPL to assess placement into calculus.

MATH required in the CMGT major: MATH 120

  • Engineering (Civil, Computer, Electrical/Electronic, Mechanical and/or Mechatronic)

Incoming first-year Engineering students that do not have college credit for MATH 120 Analytic Geometry & Calculus I or MATH 119 Precalculus (or transfer equivalents) should complete an ALEKS PPL assessment.
