I am pleased to announce that Dr. David Hassenzahl, dean of the College of Natural Sciences, will additionally serve as interim dean of the College of Agriculture beginning on September 5. Dean Hassenzahl brings nearly two decades of experience as an academic leader and administrator, with experience building and supporting infrastructure, programs, and organizations.
His accomplishments at Chico State include leadership on the new Science Building, supporting the College of Natural Sciences through the Camp Fire and COVID-19 shutdowns, serving as co-PI on the Chico STEM Connections Collaborative grant, and serving as acting CEO of Chico State Enterprises.
While most of Hassenzahl’s academic work has been in the area of risk analysis and environmental science, his experience includes fundraising for and creation of a teaching garden; vegetable, grain, and livestock production; heritage orchard rehabilitation; and aquaculture research and production at Chatham University’s Eden Hall Campus. He describes being dean as his second favorite job—his favorite being the summer he spent in the field mapping range improvements for cattle grazing in the hills east of the San Francisco Bay.
