This production will be devised by the ensemble.

"“Devising” is a process in which the entire creative team of a show develops a show collaboratively. Sometimes, there isn’t even a script to begin with (in this case, a script may be written based on improvised scenes), and sometimes there is a script (in this case, the ensemble and director work together to make decisions regarding blocking, music choices, and/or costume and makeup choices). Creating a devised theatre piece allows creativity to blossom from multiple sources in a space ... In the case of devising theatre, the director is a facilitator that encourages the birth of ideas from the minds and hearts of actors and designers. It also encourages a higher level of personal investment in the project since so many people’s ideas are present and utilized..."

Cabaret is an emotionally, politically, and sexually charged musical.  Hate images are used throughout the production.  The cast and crew may be uncomfortable at times but boundaries are honored and sacred and will be respected.  This production may not work for everyone.  Actors will have the opportunity to notate their boundaries on the audition form.

As defined by Theatrical Intimacy Educators, "Nudity" means any level of dress (or undress) that is less than an actor might wear to a rehearsal on any given day.

Full nudity will not appear in CABARET, but a number of roles will utilized “partial nudity” as defined by TIE.  No character will ever appear in less than underwear or bra/underwear. 

Intimacy utilized in CABARET will include kissing, embracing and hand holding.  All intimacy will be staged by an intimacy choreographer. 

In efforts to have consent based casting, the roles with intimacy and partial nudity are indicated below. 

CAST OF CHARACTERS

Please note that the descriptions below are describing the characters, and not the actors auditioning for the characters. 

Cliff- An American novelist, Cliff is in search of his “story” and finds it in Sally Bowles and the Kit Kat club.  Cliff is also in search of himself, it is inferred that he has had a previous Rendezvous with Bobby before falling in love with Sally.  He is an idealist, with integrity and hope.  This character is male presenting/identifying. This role involves choreographed physical intimacy with both male and female identifying characters.

Sally- Always performing, Sally speaks with a British dialect which may or may not be authentic.  The headliner of the club, Sally uses her power, sexuality, and charm to get whatever she needs.  Despite her “show” she does not feel worthy of being loved.  A layered and complex individual, Sally loves her green nail polish.   This character is female presenting/identifying.  Must dance well.  This role involves partial nudity and choreographed physical intimacy with both male and female identifying characters.

Emcee- The true master of ceremonies, the emcee is the ringmaster of madness, both inside the Kit Kat Club and out.  Charming, and devilishly deceptive.  This character could be male/female/nb presenting and identifying.  Must dance well.  Our production will be looking to reimagine this character, rather than adopting either of the two previous iconic interpretations. 

Herr Schulz- The most sensitive and kind of humans, Schulz is a middle-aged single man who identifies as Jewish.  Schulz is the type of person who sees beauty and finds hope, where others do not.  This character is male presenting/identifying.  This role involves choreographed physical intimacy with Schneider.

Ernst- A friendly and charismatic stranger who befriends Cliff on his arrival and takes him under his wing.  It is later revealed that he is a member of the Nazi party.  This character is male presenting/identifying.

Frauline Schnieder- A middle aged, stern, no-nonsense landlord who owns the apartment building Cliff is staying in.  This character is female presenting/identifying.  This role involves choreographed physical intimacy with Schulz.

Frauline Kost- A resident in Schneider’s, Kost has many sailors pay her visits and money.  This character is Female presenting/identifying.  This role requires physical intimacy.

Max- The gruff Kit Kat club owner, and Sally’s former lover.  This character is male presenting & identifying

-KK Boys-

Bobby-A flirty and fun dancer at the club.  Big personality and the life of party.  It’s suggested that Bobby had a fling with Cliff when he worked at a different club, but now he’s with Victor. This character could be male or non-binary identifying and presenting.  This role requires partial nudity.  Must dance well.

Victor- Quiet, stern, direct.  Currently dating Bobby.  This character could be male or non-binary identifying and presenting.  This character requires partial nudity.  Must dance well.

Herman- character could be male or non-binary identifying and presenting. This character requires partial nudity.  Must dance.

Hans- character could be male or non-binary identifying and presenting. This character requires partial nudity.  Must dance.

-Kit Kat girls-

-lulu- Coo-coo yes… lulu is a little woo woo.  This character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting. This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.

-Rosie- Her rosey cheeks are not referring to her cheeks, Rosie sells a delicate, soft persona onstage.  Always with a flower in her hair, she’s lacey, perfumey and fine.  This character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting. This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.

-Texas- The stereotypical “American,” Texas is a gunslinging, arrogant, opinionated persona whose ignorance takes up a lot of space.  She’s pushy, powerful, and inconsiderate.  The character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting. This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.

-Fritzie- Need some straightening out, Fritzie is unafraid to kick ass, take names, and whip things into shape.  The toughest of all the KK girls, she gets what she wants and so do her regulars… they’ve got the bruises to prove it.  This character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting. This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.

-Frenchie- Rigid, stuffy, and condescending, Frenchie’s onstage persona embodies all things French.  Regardless of the rest of her costume changes, she never appears without a beret, cigarette and furrow.  This character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting. This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.

-Helga- Described as “the baby,” Helga leans into her youth and baby doll appearance with her onstage persona.  Her “who me,” sweet-nature-act is in direct opposition to what happens her private shows.  She is not naive whatsoever… she knows what she’s doing and what she’s selling.  This character could be female or non-binary identifying and presenting.  This role requires partial nudity.  Must be a strong dancer.
