Saturday Investigation Station Activities

Most Saturdays during exhibit seasons, Gateway hosts a drop-in activity in the Investigation Station between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Click the Calendar of Events link above to see what activity is happening. All activities are included with museum admission and are subject to change.

Third Thursdays Extended Summer Hours

Every third Thursday of the month this summer, we're keeping our doors open until 8:00pm! Each evening will have a special activity from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Regular admission prices apply. Thank you to our media sponsor NSPR, North State Public Radio, a service of CSU, Chico.

August 16, 2018:

Celebrate the Perseid Meteor shower as we discover where meteors come from, why we have annual meteor showers, and other fascinating facts about our solar system! Members of the Chico Community Observatory will be here.

  • Impacts: Join us as we create and study craters with our own simulation of a meteor shower. Discover the tools used to find and observe craters on the moon and other planets and what the craters can reveal about its history and composition.
  • Pocket Solar Systems: Explore the size and scale of our solar system as we learn about the size of the planets and their position in relation to one another. Take home a pocket-size model of our place in space!
  • Objects in Orbit: Experiment with different size and weighted balls to investigate how changing conditions can cause phenomena like stellar wobble and planet formation.

Shubert's Homemade Ice Cream & Candy will be at Gateway during our extended hours tonight.

Gateway will continue with Third Thursdays this fall on September 20, October 18 and November 15, 2018. We will keep our doors open until 8:00pm and have a special evening activity. Please check back for activity details.

Museum Without Walls

Gateway Science Museum hosts Museum Without Walls, also known as MWOW, on Wednesday evenings in April and October. This series began in the fall of 2003, long before Gateway Science Museum was completed in 2010, which is how the series got its name. The series presents lectures with topics related to one or more of the exhibits currently on display at Gateway. MWOW lectures are open to all ages. For details about MWOW, click here or check the calendar of events above.

Herbarium Workshops

The Chico State Herbarium continues to offer workshops for the general public and the professional alike. Visit their webpage for a complete list of upcoming programs.
