Money Saving Tips for Students

There are steps that students can take to decrease the price of their own textbooks, as well as encourage faculty to assign low- or zero- cost options.

Purchase used textbooks.

Rent textbooks - if you rent from the Chico State Wildcat Store you can still highlight and take notes; if you decide to keep it at the end of the semester you can pay the difference then.

Purchase e-book (digital) versions.

If you purchased a new or used version of your book, you can often sell it back to the bookstore at the end of the semester. This can sometimes be cheaper than renting.

Actively shop textbook markets before classes begin; Chico State Wildcat Store has a price-match guarantee for books purchased directly from Amazon LLC.

Check the library - there may be a copy of your book(s) on reserve or to be checked out from the regular collection.

Share with a classmate (according to an agreed upon schedule) or trade books you no longer need for ones you do.

Encourage your instructor to consider Open Educational Resources (OER) options as alternatives.
