Retention Barrier Removal

The Retention to Graduation workgroup is focused on:

  • Improving overall campus Year 1–2 retention rate by 4% over 3 years (85% by 2025).
  • Improving historically underserved students’ year 1–2 retention rate by 7% over 3 years (no gap by 2025).

Key Objectives

  • Contribute to FTES growth of 500 over 2023-24  
  • Review and act on policy and process barriers identified by Advancing Equity Project in 2021‐22 and 2022-23, including those mandated by Chancellor’s Office (Equity Goals and Priorities November, 2021 (PDF)) 
  • Authorize pilot of amended registration calendar for spring 2024.   
  • Determine process to enact EM 93‐008 (Mandatory Orientation). 
  • Establish campus guidelines and procedures for the use of registration holds.  
  • Implement process to assure that transcript audits for all first-time and transfer students are complete prior to registration for their first term at the CSU.  
  • Reassess graduation filing process and implement identified improvements.  
  • Reassess drop-for-non-payment policy and implement identified improvements.  
  • Consider adopting limited debt forgiveness policy.  
  • Establish clear and equitable guidance to enable funding students (research stipends, free textbooks, equity-based awards and scholarships, etc.) without incurring negative financial aid implications.  
  • Consider adjustment of student fee processes (decoupling, bundling, timing, etc.).
