About us

Academics

The German program at Chico State offers a major (27 units) and a minor (18 units) and German classes also count toward the minor in European Studies. Courses address a variety of engaging topics from current events, film, and literature to the cultural history of German food, German castles, and Berlin Past and Present. Small class sizes ensure close contact between faculty and students and a strong sense of community.

Honors and awards

Majors can apply for the Melitta J. Singer Memorial Scholarship to support their study of German. Honors in the Major allows students to work closely with faculty in their area of interest on an original research project. Students who demonstrate academic excellence and dedication to the study of German language and culture are invited to join the Chico chapter of the National German Honor Society Delta Phi Alpha. And each year, the program recognizes an Outstanding Student in German.

Outside of the classroom

The German Club organizes monthly social events that bring program participants together outside of the classroom. And faculty, students, and other members of the campus and community gather at the weekly Stammtisch to chat and play games over coffee and snacks.

Studying abroad

Many of our German students take advantage of Chico State’s excellent study abroad options. While abroad, students can earn General Education (GE) units and fulfill Writing (W) and Global Cultures (GC) graduation requirements while also earning units toward a German major or minor and a European Studies minor. Majors can apply for the Elizabeth Randolph Study Abroad Award to help fund their experience abroad.

Double majoring

German is a low-unit major that is easy to combine with a second area of study. Students often double major or minor in such areas as International Relations, Business, Computer Science, History, English, or various engineering fields or the natural sciences.

After graduation

Our graduates have earned prestigious Fulbright awards, and have entered graduate programs in a wide array of fields in the U.S. and abroad. Our alumni have held positions in international companies such as BMW, Lufthansa, Bosch, Chevron, and SAP. And they have entered careers in international education, diplomacy, business, intelligence and law enforcement, human resources, translation, and teaching German and English, among other fields. Some students continue on to Chico State’s M.A. program in Language Teaching.
