Delta Phi Alpha

The Chico chapter of the National German Honor Society Delta Phi Alpha(opens in new window) recognizes academic excellence in German and dedication to the study of German language and culture. Delta Phi Alpha was founded in 1929 and has over 300 chapters and thousands of members across the United States. The Chico State chapter is Upsilon Psi.

The German program nominates qualified students for membership in Delta Phi Alpha. Students who meet the following criteria will be considered for membership: at least sophomore standing minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 minimum German GPA of 3.25 enrollment in at least one German language course at the 300-level or above at CSU, Chico, and ongoing active participation in the CSU, Chico German program and/or its activities.

Membership carries several benefits.

  • Student members planning international study may apply for German Study Abroad Scholarships offered by Delta Phi Alpha
  • Students intending to enter a career in language teaching may apply for the Future K-12 German Teacher Award
  • Seniors planning to advance to graduate study may apply for the National German Award for Outstanding Senior
  • Members can apply for grants to support activities projects that promote German language and culture locally and complement the mission of Delta Phi Alpha.
  • Members can use honor society affiliation as tangible sign of academic success to advance their professional career
  • Members can wear special graduation honors.

Members meet one of the U.S. Civil Service Commission requirements for entrance at the GS-7 level in numerous Federal government occupations, thus ensuring higher entry level status and salary. 

New members are initiated in the spring of each year. Inductees pay a one-time membership fee of $40 which includes:

  • lifetime membership in the society
  • a certificate of membership
  • a Delta Phi Alpha Honor pin to signify high academic achievement in German
  • optional (add +$10): a braided black, red, and gold cord that can be worn at graduation
