Monardella villosa, is a perennial plant that is commonly known as Coyote Mint. Despite what the common name suggests, these plants do not smell like coyote, but instead have a pleasant mint smell. These native plants are drought tolerant and can grow as high has 0.6m and as wide as 0.9m. The mint can be found across California in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and various forest habitats. The rounded cluster of small pinks flowers can be found during the summer months. The flowers are especially attractive to butterflies (Pipevine Swallowtail in photo). Remedies made by Native Americans used Coyote Mint for upset stomachs, respiratory conditions, and sore throats.
