Muhlenbergia rigens, or Deer Grass, is a bunchgrass found in southwestern United States and California. In California, the grass grows in coastal regions of central and southern California as well as the Sierra and Cascades foothills. Deer Grass has half inch leaves that can reach 1.2m in length. A blooming flower towers over most grasses at about 1.5m in height. The bunchgrass does well in most soil, but does the best in sandy or gravelly soils. Once matured, which takes about one to two years, the grass requires no supplemental water, making it popular for homes. Owing to it’s size and hardy nature, Deer Grass leaves were historically weaved into baskets by California Natives.
