Penstemon heterophyllus

Penstemon heterophyllus, or Foothill Penstemon, is a long lived perennial where it is endemic to California’s coastal regions the northern Sierra Nevada foothills. The plant has striking 2.5cm violet, wide mouthed flowers on spikes that reach up to 1.5m in height. The narrow leaves reach 10cm in length. The Foothill Penstemon enjoys full sun and is drought resistant. The flowers are open from April to August where Hummingbirds and insects, especially bees, can be seen.
