Earth and Environmental Sciences (ERTH)

Earth and Environmental Sciences

Graduates of Chico State’s Earth and Environmental Sciences (ERTH) programs are equipped to solve complex challenges facing the environment today. Our Geology and Environmental Sciences programs combine theoretical and applied learning taught by faculty managing all aspects of earth system science. More than half of our faculty have funded research projects by national agencies (NSF, NASA, etc.). Since 2018, 75% of our graduates are employed in the field or attending other graduate programs.

Earth and Environmental Sciences Programs

Disciplines within the Earth and Environmental Sciences are directed toward understanding the earth systems from the earth's core to the atmosphere. Students in our department have the opportunity to conduct applied and basic research in an effort to understand physical processes on and within the Earth, and human influences that affect the environment.

We have B.S. and M.S. programs in: 1) Geology and 2) Environmental Sciences. Geology is the study of Earth's past and the processes that have occurred throughout its history, and continue to alter our planet. Environmental science is the study of interactions within the Earth's biosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and geosphere, concentrating on natural and human-caused perturbations such as pollution and changes to our climate and environment.

Curious about what a Geology or Environmental Science degree can do for you? Hear it straight from our faculty, students, and staff, while we explore the geological and environmental surroundings in and around Chico through this short video.
