The Chizlett Scholarship and the Phelps Scholarships
Designated for upper division or graduate students in nursing, and the Agnes Dix Scholarship is designated for continuing upper division students in nursing. The priority for the Tieck Scholarship is students with second degree tuition expenses. Some scholarships are designated for specific towns or counties.

Helen Hammes Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship gives priority to ethnic minority students with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Watling Family Nursing Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student accepted in the RN to BSN program based on financial need and 3.0 minimum GPA. Preference is given to a student where English-is-a-second language.

Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Nu Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a student who is a resident of Oroville. To apply, contact Alpha Beta Chapter of Omega Nu in Oroville.

Feather River Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
A scholarship is awarded annually to a student in a Health Career major. To apply, contact Feather River Hospital. 

Military Scholarships and Loans
Two or three-year scholarships or loans which lead to a commission as an Officer in the Armed Services are sometimes available. Contact the military recruiters.

Nursing Loan Funds

Dorothy C. Wisner Memorial Loan Fund
For residents of Yuba, Sutter, or Colusa counties: an interest-free loan of $500 to $3,000. Repayment is deferred until graduation from a health career program. Contact Mrs. Corrine A. Robson, Auxiliary to the Yuba-Sutter-Colusa County Medical Society.

Orval and Leola Tatum Nursing Loan Fund
Two loan awards (interest free) of $1,000.00 each are available to students whose applications are to be accompanied by a recommendation from a Nursing faculty member.

Short-Term Loans
For nursing students in need of a small ($500.00 maximum) short-term (90 days maximum) loan, there are two loan funds available to nursing students in need of a small ($500.00 maximum) short-term (90 days maximum) loan. Students apply at the Office of Student Financial Services

Nursing Work Study Program

Work study programs for nursing students allow selected students to practice the skills they have mastered as students, while working, if agreeable to the employing agency. This arrangement allows students to gain expanded practical experience while working for pay, and benefits the employer in providing a worker with a higher level of practice capability. Work study arrangements are approved and encouraged by the Board of Registered Nursing.

Benefits for employers

The employer will be able to:

  • Meet routine and special employment needs with high quality employees.
  • Effectively pre-screen and recruit future full-time employees less expensively than through traditional methods.
  • Curb the costs of training employees.
  • Enhance collegiality between nursing education and nursing service by actively involving clinical nurses in the educational experience of nursing students.

Benefits for nursing students

The student will be able to:

  • Obtain additional practical experience in clinical nursing
  • Apply knowledge and skills learned in the academic program.
  • Learn to interact professionally and develop confidence in providing nursing care in a clinical setting.
  • Enhance socialization to the reality of the work setting.
  • Strengthen professional nursing identity by working under the supervision of a clinical nurse as a role model.
  • Gain experience as a member of the health care team.

  • Earn money while in school.
  • Develop future employment opportunities and build an employment history
  • Obtain academic credit.

Getting Started With the Work Study Program

The employer may select current employees who are also nursing students, to participate in this program, or students may seek out an employer who is willing to hire them as part of the work-study program.

Once a student/employer relationship is defined, the student seeks a faculty preceptor on the school of nursing faculty. The student may ask an individual faculty member, or consult with the Director of the School of Nursing to determine eligible faculty. Once a faculty supervisor has been designated, the student enrolls in Nursing 289, for 1-4 units. During summer and intersession, enrollment is through Regional and Continuing Education, with a fee of approximately $120 per unit. The employing agency will designate a registered nurse preceptor, who will meet with the faculty and student to establish the parameters of clinical practice and supervision needed.

Although the student is accountable for his/her own actions, the ultimate responsibility for nursing care rests with the nursing staff under whose supervision the student must work. The student must take responsibility for consulting nursing resources for any questions before performing any nursing procedure or intervention. The student may not perform any procedure or intervention which he/she has not already been taught in the nursing program.
