Student Spotlight

Izabel Silva Student Spotlighted

Izabel Silva began working at the REACH Student Success Center (RSSC) as a peer mentor in 2021. She depicts excellence, leadership, and positivity in all facets, and is an asset to the center and the larger university. She has mentored more than 20 students in the last two years. These students look to Izabel as a role-model, academic mentor, and trusted friend. She facilitates the “REACH for Success” class, coordinates individual weekly meetings to check on student academic progress, and helps ensure they feel that they belong here. Izabel excels in this role through her inclusive, genuine, supporting and understanding nature. She is so supportive and influential, that she has a few mentees from her first hub now training to become mentors themselves. Izabel has played a crucial role in bringing REACH to where it is today.  Read more about Izabel (PDF).

Why you chose Chico State: I chose Chico State for two reasons: I knew I wanted to experience independence away from home, and I really fell in love with the campus and surrounding nature. Coming from a bigger city, I felt so much more peace when I stepped foot on campus and knew I had to come here.

Your Leadership quote/mission/vision: I make a difference in the world through acts of selflessness and compassion. Leading by example, I demonstrate fairness and encouragement. As a mentor, I appreciate the opportunity to help other first-generation students succeed in college.  Seeing the growth in the mentees throughout the year is rewarding.  We learn a lot from each other and it helps me stay motivated toward meeting my goals.

Plans after graduation: After graduation, I plan to gain some experience in my field study through hopefully volunteering with American Red Cross and obtaining my CNA certification.

Words of advice for current/future students: Only focus on what you CAN control, and the rest should fall into place when it needs to. You are always where you are meant to be in that time and moment.
