When to Use an Off-Campus Provider
- During an emergency – Call 911 from any phone for urgent assistance
- When the University is closed and virtual care is not sufficient
- While traveling outside of Chico and virtual care is not sufficient
- When a specialist is required to treat a medical condition.
- For ongoing physical or mental health conditions requiring frequent visits.
What is Covered by International Student Health Insurance
Your international student health insurance plan will be used to help you pay for medical visits with off-campus providers in the community.
Before scheduling your appointment, consult the Master Policy Guide to understand how much the policy will pay for each visit.
Important Note - dental and vision care are optional add on coverage (not included in this plan). Most students purchase the dental plan offered by Western Dental (a local dentist with reasonable fees).
Find an Off-Campus Provider
You should attempt to choose a provider that is accepted by your insurance - this is the most affordable option. Health care providers in the U.S. belong to "networks" - your network is United Healthcare.
To find a provider go to www.whyuhc.com/us1 and follow these steps:
- Click on “Search the network for your healthcare provider”
- A drop down will appear. You will select “Search the network: Options PPO”
- A new tab/page will open up - you can choose from the following: People, Places, Services & Treatment, Care by Condition, or Cost Estimates. Remember to enter your current location. Example (Chico, CA).
- Call the medical provider's office to set up an appointment.
- Bring your medical card with you to your appointment and show it to the receptionist. For most in-network visits, you will pay a $20 co-pay before you can meet with the provider.
What to Bring to the Medical Appointment
Bring the following with you when meeting with a medical provider:
- Passport or California ID Card
- Student ID Card
- Health Insurance Card - you can download from a link sent to your Wildcat email
- Payment of $20 for in-network visits or $100 for hospital visits (for true emergencies)
- Warm sweater and socks (it is usually cold in most medical facilities in Chico)
