Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act

Chico State is committed to fully implementing the spirit as well as the legal requirements of both the Federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA), which were enacted to acknowledge the fundamental human right of Native Americans to their ancestors and cultural items.

Though much work remains to be in full compliance, the University has submitted an in-progress inventory of its collections and consulted on the repatriation of ancestors and cultural items with Tribes that decided to form a consortium after consulting with the University. Chico State expects to repatriate a large portion of its NAGPRA collection soon. The collections subject to NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA are housed in a secure facility on campus, and are overseen by the Office of Tribal Relations. We have current notices posted and will continue to consult with and conduct outreach to culturally affiliated Tribes. See the President's statement.

If you are a Tribe or Tribal affiliate and would like to discuss repatriation, please contact Dawn Rewolinski, Cultural Artifacts Specialist, at drewolinski@csuchico.edu or 530-898-3438.
