Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
Chico State is committed to fully implementing the spirit as well as the legal requirements of both the Federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (CalNAGPRA), which were enacted to acknowledge the fundamental human right of Native Americans to their ancestors and cultural items.
Chico State currently holds Native American ancestral remains and cultural items and is actively outreaching to Tribal Nations for consultation and ultimately the return of all collections. The collections subject to NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA are housed in a secure facility on campus and are overseen by the Office of Tribal Relations (OTR). We have current notices posted and will continue to consult with and conduct outreach to culturally affiliated Tribes. See the President's statement.
In addition to the collections within campus control, Chico State also acts as a repository for State, Federal, and private collections that are subject to NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA. Please see the map of collections by county, campus, and agency on the Chancellor’s Office CSU Campus Collections page.
OTR is within the Office of the President and overseen by Director, Rachel McBride-Praetorius, Cultural Artifacts Specialist, Michelle Hansen, and Cultural Artifacts Data System Specialist, Frankie Torres.
