The Turner Celebrates Student Printmakers
April 26, 2010
Showcasing and celebrating the talent and genius of CSU, Chico students, the 15th Annual Student Printmaking Exhibition runs April 26 through May 14, 2010, at the Janet Turner Print Museum at Meriam Library.
It is a fitting exhibition honoring the memory of Dr. Janet Turner, a professor of Art at California State University, Chico for more than 20 years. A world renowned painter and printmaker in her own right, Dr. Turner amassed an extensive collection of fine art prints including works Dali, Durer, Goya, Hockney, Homer, Miro, Renoir and Rembrandt. Tuner used prints from her collection as a teaching tool to illustrate various printmaking techniques. Her collection continues to inspire and support new generations of printmakers.
Students who have created fine art prints during the academic year are eligible to submit work. Guest juror Sarah Whorf, associate professor of art at Humboldt State University in northern California, will select prints for exhibition and award prizes for the three most outstanding works. The award-winning prints will be added to the Turner's permanent student print collection division. Ms. Whorf ‘s work has been included in over 100 exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad and is in private and public collections including the Princeton University Graphic Arts Library, Bradley University in Peoria Illinois and Frogman's Press and Print Gallery in Beresford, South Dakota.
Complimenting and enhancing the exhibition will be a display of students' ceramics entitled "7th Ink/Clay," an exploration of the relationship between printmaking and clay. And don't miss the first floor display cases in Ayres Hall where an array of former prize winning prints will be exhibited thanks to student curatorial intern Kristin Barrera.
Awards will be announced in conjunction with the University Art Gallery's 55th Student Juried Exhibition Thursday, May 13th at 6:00 PM in Taylor Hall (1st and Normal). Both the University Art Gallery and the Turner will be open May 13th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
