First Impressions: Curator's Choice
September 6-October 15, 2022
Do first impressions illuminate or deceive? The inaugural exhibition by new Turner curator Dr. Rachel Skokowski explores the unexpected connections and serendipitous surprises that emerge when coming to a collection with fresh eyes.
Juxtaposing prints by familiar names and new faces, First Impressions celebrates the diversity of the Turner collection and the playful possibilities of opening an archive drawer. Chance encounters reveal deeper links running through the collection: political and social commentary, respect for the fragility of the natural world or the human body, a meditation on the forces of luck and fate in our lives. First Impressions encourages looking beyond the surface and perhaps even returning for a second or third impression.
Generously sponsored by Russ and Jan Burnham.

Documenting Dreams: Juana Estrada Hernández and Humberto Saenz
January 24-April 1, 2023
For Juana Estrada Hernández and Humberto Saenz, the personal is always political. Weaving their life experiences as Mexican-American immigrants into their work, both artists offer a powerful reflection on the current border crisis.
Their prints unveil the lure, promise, and harsh reality of the American dream. In series such as El Oficiò (The Trade), Saenz combines Pre-Columbian Codex imagery with the contemporary working conditions of many migrants. In Nuestra Historia (Our Story), Estrada Hernández narrates her family’s journey from Mexico to the United States. Together, their work explores notions of home, exposes the fine line between assimilation and erasure, and speaks to the necessity of cultural pride.
The Turner is proud to present this exhibition at Chico State, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), and invites students, faculty, and the community to engage with the vital themes on display in the work of these two exciting new voices.
Humberto Saenz, Amago de Color (Color Threat), 2008. Lithograph
Juana Estrada Hernández, Comida de mi Madre (My Mother's Food), 2020. Lithograph, screenprint.
