Gateway Science Museum opened in 2010 as a university science museum. With more than 8,000 hours of university student-related activities each year, Gateway is a site of learning for college students. Learn more about our mission here.(opens in new window)

How do we support the university learning environment?
Free admission: CSU, Chico and Butte Community College students are welcome to visit for free.
Employment: University students are employed as Curiosity Guides.
Paid Internships: We offer internships in graphic design, marketing, museum education, curation, tech support and other museum related functions.
- Students are recruited from all majors
- Attention is paid to hiring First Gen students
- We offer flexible hours, ongoing training, and a supportive work environment
- Gateway supports anti-racism in museums, science, and universities
- Students are encouraged to stay on at Gateway through graduation
- The murals outside Gateway were created by Chico State art students
Academic Internships & Class Projects: Faculty and students in various departments use the museum and its online platforms as venues for public engagement projects.
Student Clubs: Student clubs lead hands on activities and workshops at Gateway for the public and now online.
Individual Research Opportunities/Showcases: Gateway hosts individual student work through our demo lab, research poster exhibits, art exhibits, onsite art projects and online formats.
Academic Courses: Customized field trips are available for college classes.
Science Education’s Teaching Science in a Museum Setting(opens in new window) is held in conjunction with Gateway, deepening student learning through real-world teaching experience in a museum setting.

Gateway Science Museum was envisioned by campus and community members to be a “Gateway” between the university and the community where science happens and is explored by all. Through this remarkable partnership, the museum has become an integral part of the Chico community providing educational experiences for everyone.
