Application Process
TRIO SSS serves a small group of scholars and space is limited. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate everyone who applies. Before applying, please familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria, application deadlines, and selection process.
- Eligibility
Eligibility for TRIO Student Support Services is determined by federal regulations.
To qualify, you must:- Be a current or admitted student at CSU, Chico;
- Plan to attend courses at the CSU, Chico campus;
- Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident; and
- Demonstrate a need for academic support.
Note: TRIO SSS is a needs-based program. Applicants meeting two or more of the following criteria receive priority during the selection process.
- Be a first-generation college student
- Meet federal income eligibility guidelines; based on family size; or
- Have a documented disability: To document your disability with the university please contact the Accessibility Resource Center.
- Deadlines
All applications received by the dates listed below are reviewed first and given priority. Late applications are accepted until the program is full. If applying after the priority deadline, contact our office to inquire if space is available.
Applications must be submitted via U.S. mail or hand-delivered to our office. Postmarks are accepted as meeting the deadline. Please do not e-mail or fax your application.
First Time First-Years (fall start) - Applications will be reviewed upon receipt.
New Transfer Students (fall start) - Applications will be reviewed upon receipt.
New Transfer Students (spring start) - December 1st
Continuing Students- No priority deadline
- Applications for current Chico students are reviewed throughout the year on an ongoing basis (as space allows).
- Seniors are not eligible. Students must have completed fewer than 120 units to be considered.
- SelectionApplication Review Process
Applications are reviewed in batches. Applications received by the priority deadline are in the first review batch.
Applications received after the priority deadline are reviewed in a weekly batch until the program is full. Applications that arrive after the program is full are not reviewed until space becomes available. Pending applications are kept in a secure file for one calendar year.
Students who miss the priority deadline are encouraged to inquire if space is still available before submitting an application. Please note - the program is often full after the first review batch.

Space in our program is severely limited - we usually receive many more applications than space available. In a competitive situation, preference is given to applicants who demonstrate the greatest need and highest level of motivation to use their education to make a positive impact on their families and communities.
