Application Process

• Eligibility

  Eligibility for TRIO Student Support Services is determined by federal regulations.  

  To qualify, you must:

  1. Be a current or admitted student at CSU, Chico;
  2. Plan to attend courses at the CSU, Chico campus (in-person);
  3. Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident; and
  4. Demonstrate a need for academic support.

  Note: We are currently not accepting fully online students at this time - we apologize for the inconvenience. Also, EOP and REACH students may not dual enroll with TRIO SSS at Chico State.

  You must also meet one or more of the following criteria:

  Note: TRIO SSS is a needs-based program. Applicants who self-identify as first-generation and low-income receive priority during the selection process.

  • Be a first-generation college student
  • Meet federal income eligibility guidelines; based on family size; or
  • Have a documented disability: To document your disability with the university please contact the Accessibility Resource Center.
• Deadlines

  All applications received by the dates listed below are reviewed first and given priority. Late applications or incomplete applications will not be accepted. If applying after the priority deadline, contact our office to inquire if space is available.

  Applications must be submitted via the Qualtrics Survey, any additional application requirements are to be emailed to the sss@csuchico.edu email. 

  First Time First-Years (Fall Start) - Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Please note: At this time we are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2025 semester. 

  New Transfer Students (Fall Start) - Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Please note: At this time we are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2025 semester. 

  Continuing Students- Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Please note: At this time we are no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2025 semester. 

  • Applications for current Chico students are reviewed throughout the year on an ongoing basis (as space allows).
  • Seniors are not eligible. Students must have completed fewer than 120 units to be considered.

  Application Review Process

  Applications are reviewed in batches. Applications received by the priority deadline are in the first review batch.

  Applications received after the priority deadline are reviewed in a weekly batch until the program is full. Applications that arrive after the program is full are not reviewed until space becomes available. Pending applications are kept in a secure file for one calendar year.

  Students who miss the priority deadline are encouraged to inquire if space is still available before submitting an application. Please note - the program is often full after the first review batch.

  Selection Process

  Space in our program is severely limited - we usually receive many more applications than space available. In a competitive situation, preference is given to applicants who demonstrate the greatest need and highest level of motivation to use their education to make a positive impact on their families and communities. Once you have been admitted, there is no need to reapply!

  If selected, please be aware that you are required to attend our summer bridge program:

  • First-time freshman, you will be required to move-in on Sunday, August 17, 2025. Our summer bridge program called FOCUS runs the week before school starts from Sunday, August 17 - Saturday, August 23. Classes begin Monday, August 25, 2025. Make sure to keep an eye on your Chico State email for more information. 
  • Incoming transfer and continuing students, you will be required to participate in our one-day summer bridge program called STEP which typically occurs the week before school starts. More details to come! Make sure to keep an eye on your Chico State email for more information.
