University "Recognized" vs. "Unrecognized" Organizations

It is important for students and families to understand the differences between University “Recognized” and “Unrecognized” student organizations, which includes fraternities and sororities:

A "recognized" student organization or club is one that maintains good standing with the University. These University-recognized clubs receive guidance on University policies and standards, including the Student Code of Conduct. They have the privilege of utilizing University facilities and equipment, holding meetings and programs on campus, recruiting new members who will also be recognized by the University, and participating in University-sponsored activities and events. "Unrecognized" groups, including those listed below, have no affiliation with the University. These organizations and their members do not receive any support or advisement from the University. Unrecognized clubs are not allowed to participate in any university-sponsored activities. Students, departments, sports clubs, student organizations, and other entities should avoid joining or collaborating with the following groups.

The University has chosen not to engage with these organizations due to serious concerns regarding the health and safety of our students and the university community. We strongly discourage maintaining or seeking membership in these organizations. Students, organizations, and campus departments that interact with or seek affiliation with these groups do so at their own risk. Please note: Allegations of conduct violations involving members of unrecognized groups will be addressed through the individual Student Conduct Process.

The following is a list of organizations which are not recognized by Chico State. This list is not exhaustive and if you have questions about the status of an organization you can contact SLLgeneral@csuchico.edu 

Fraternities and Sororities

Alpha Chi (ΑΧ) – Sorority 

Alpha Omicron Pi (ΑΟΠ)

• Unrecognized due to national headquarters’ revoking chapter recognition due to low chapter membership. 

Alpha Sigma Phi (ΑΣΦ) - Fraternity 

• Alpha Sigma Phi has not been a recognized fraternity at Chico State in recent years. However, the University has received reports that the fraternity is operating in Chico.

Delta Chi (ΔΧ) – Fraternity 

• Recognition revoked 
• Reinstatement will not be considered prior to Spring 2028 
• Hazing 
• In addition to the University sanction, the National Headquarters has revoked the charter

Delta Sigma Theta - Sorority

• Unrecognized due to inactive membership. The organization does not have any active members.

Delta Tau Chi (ΔΤΧ) 

• Formed by members from the revoked Delta Chi chapter 
• This organization has no University oversight or affiliation and does not belong to any National Organization.

Delta Psi Delta (ΔΨΔ) - Fraternity 

Kappa Alphia Psi - Fraternity

• Unrecognized due to inactive membership. The organization does not have any active members.

Lambda Sigma Gamma (ΛΣΓ) – Sorority 

• University Recognition Revoked
• In addition to the University sanction, the National Headquarters has revoked the charter
• Reinstatement will not be considered prior to Spring 2027
• Hazing

Phi Nu Chi (ΦΝΧ)

• Formed by members from the revoked Sigma Pi chapter 
• This organization has no University oversight or affiliation and does not belong to any National Organization

Sigma Nu (ΣΝ) - Fraternity 

• The University has not received reports of Sigma Nu operating in Chico

Sigma Pi (ΣΠ) - Fraternity

• University Recognition Revoked
• In addition to the University sanction, the National Headquarters has revoked the charter
• Reinstatement will not be considered prior to Spring 2027
• Hazing, non-compliance

Theta Chi (θΧ) - Fraternity 

• Theta Chi has not been a recognized fraternity at Chico State in recent years. However, the University has received reports that the fraternity is operating in Chico.

Tau Gamma Theta (ΤΓθ) - Fraternity 

• Tau Gamma Theta has not been a recognized fraternity at Chico State in recent years. However, the University has received reports that the fraternity is operating in Chico.

Student Organizations

Chico Snow Club 

• Not recognized due to Executive Order 1068 compliance. However, the University has received reports that the organization is operating in Chico.

Sport clubs

Chico Club Golf 

• Not recognized due to Executive Order 1068 compliance
