Department Awards Spring 2021

Application Submission Deadline: 11:59 pm PST, Friday, March 5, 2021

To qualify for a Department of Sociology Award you must be an enrolled Sociology:

  • Major or minor (see criteria below )
  • Full-time or part-time during Spring 2021 (see criteria below)

 You may apply for multiple awards:

  • Only one short essay is required, but if you are applying for multiple awards you must address the criteria of each award
  • Your essay should be brief: 500-750 words

Amounts vary depending on the number of winners chosen and donations to the awards fund.

Award Criteria

Travis A. Williams Educational Enhancement Award
  • Sociology majors and minors
  • Award may be used for expenses for travel to a conference or academic event, study abroad; for research or special projects
  • Essay: Should address your commitment to the field of sociology, and describe what you hope to gain from your plans to travel, study abroad, or engage in a special project
Exceptional Academic Achievement Award
  • Sociology majors who will graduate in spring, summer or fall of 2021
  • CSU, Chico GPA: 3.5 or higher
  • This award honors a student for outstanding academic achievement
  • Students are nominated for this award by Sociology faculty and you will need to provide the names of your two faculty nominators
  • Essay: Should address how your experience in the Sociology program has contributed to your world view and how you expect to use your degree to achieve your career objective
Robert P. Rankin Award
  • Sociology majors who will graduate in the spring, summer or fall of 2021
  • CSU, Chico GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • This award recognizes students who have put their sociological knowledge into action through a civic engagement project, activism, community-based research, or leadership in a campus or community organization
  • Essay: Should describe how you have applied your sociological knowledge in hands-on ways for the benefit of others
W.E.B. duBois Award
  • Sociology majors: juniors or seniors
  • CSU, Chico GPA 3.0
  • This award recognizes Sociology juniors or seniors who have overcome obstacles and challenges in life and in their educational pursuits
  • Essay: Should address the obstacles you have overcome, your commitment to Sociology, and how the award will contribute to the completion of your degree
Walt Schaefer Outstanding Research Paper Award
  • Sociology major or minor
  • Cumulative GPA 2.5
  • Must have completed at least 45 units by the end of spring 2021
  • To encourage and reward extraordinary research and writing in sociology, this cash award recognizes students who have completed at least one research paper with a minimum word count of 2,500 including citations, and an abstract of approximately 100 words
  • Research should examine primary and/or secondary data collected for a class assignment or under the direct supervision of a CSU, Chico Sociology faculty member
