Steps to Apply For Medi-Cal
What is Medi-Cal?
State sponsored medical insurance for low-income individuals.
It helps cover physical health, mental health, and medication.
Step #1: Assess Eligibility
To see if you qualify based on income, look at the chart below:

Keep in Mind the Following:
- Income: you do NOT need to be employed or have an income to qualify for Medi-Cal
- Roommates: their information is NOT included in assessing your eligibility
Tax Status
- Independent: if you file your taxes as independent, then your family size is 1 and only your income is counted
- Dependent: if your parents claim you as a dependent on their taxes, then their income is also factored into your eligibility criteria
Step #2: Complete an Application

Step #3: Interview
Once the application is received, you will be called for an interview. Interviews can be done in person or over the phone.
The case worker may request certain documents to help them determine your eligibility. Be prepared to provide the following items:
¨ Driver’s license or state ID ¨ Social security card ¨ W2 for this tax year ¨ Rent receipts | ¨ Financial aid award letter ¨ Birth certificate ¨ Pay stubs from the last 3 months ¨ Bank statements |
Step #4: Select a Managed Care Plan/Clinic
You will receive a letter in the mail notifying you if your Medi-Cal application was approved or denied.
If approved, you must select your preferred:
- Managed Health Care Plan: in Butte County there are two options, Anthem Blue Cross or California Health and Wellness.
- Medical Clinic: this can be any health clinic in town. Commonly selected clinics include: Northern Valley Indian Health and Ampla Health. Note: the Student Health Center is not an option that can be selected, however, most student go to the Student Health Center for their basic needs regardless of which clinic they select.
Step #5: Insurance Card Received
Your medical insurance card will be mail to you. Keep this card safe.
