Benefit Eligibility for Staff (Non-Faculty) Employees
Health, Dental and Vision Eligibility
- Must be appointed at least half-time. Timebase .50 or greater.
- Must be appointed for more than six months (at least six months and one day).
Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health-only Eligibility
Effective January 1, 2015, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires the CSU to offer health coverage to employees (and any eligible dependents) that work 130 hours (or 0.75 timebase) or more per month. The ACA guidelines provide for health coverage or FlexCash only. ACA does not provide dental or vision plan coverage. Current plan options for health-only coverage may be found in the 2022 side-by-side comparison for Health Plan Benefits (PDF).
Other Information
Qualifying appointments may be either permanent or temporary.
The employee will be contacted if eligible, however, an employee may contact benefits to check eligibility at any time.
Once an employee has acquired eligibility and has enrolled in a plan, he/she may continue enrollment during subsequent continuous appointments of at least half-time regardless of the duration of new appointment.
Employees have 60 days from the date of the eligible appointment to enroll in benefit plans. After 60 days, an employee has the opportunity to request enrollment as a “late enrollment event” or during the next open enrollment period.
Dependent enrollment coincides with the enrollment of the employee and supplemental documentation is required. Dependents may also be enrolled due to a “qualifying life event” or during the annual open enrollment period.
The effective date of benefits depends on many factors; including your first day of employment, your pay plan, pay periods and when you submit your enrollment documents.
If you are covered by a non-CSU health plan, you may enroll in FlexCash. This benefit allows you to waive your CSU health plan and receive a cash reimbursement.
