Barbara Riess

Biography

Barbara D. Riess is the Associate Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. She received her doctorate in Latin American Literature and Translation from Arizona State University and her masters degree in Spanish literature from University of Connecticut.

Barbara co-translated the underground classic Chicano novel Puppet (New Mexico Press, 2001) and Sanctuaries of the Heart (University of Arizona Press, 2005) by Margarita Cota-Cárdenas. She also published translations of María Elena Llana’s work in the collection Cuba On the Edge (Nottingham, 2007). Her research on Cuban women’s fiction has been published in Confluencia, Latin American Literary Review and Cuban Studies/Estudios Cubanos. Barbara has received many awards and distinctions, including the Mellon Grant for Collaborative Research in the Humanities in 2013.

Recibió su doctorado de la Universidad Estatal de Arizona (ASU) en estudios de la literatura latinoamericana y la traducción. Tradujo, junto con un colega, la novela chicana Puppet de Margarita Cota-Cárdenas y la memoriaSanctuarios de la misma autora. Su investigación académica gira en torno a la narrativa femenina cubana, sobre la cual ha publicado en Confluencia, Latin American Literary Review y Cuban Studies/Estudios Cubanos.
