Custodial Services

The Custodial Services division is committed to maintaining, cleaning, and protecting the interior portions of University facilities. We provide a safe, attractive, functional and comfortable environment for our faculty, staff, students and visitors, which contributes to a positive experience and student success. Typical services include cleaning, sanitizing, floor care, stocking paper products, changing interior light bulbs, and collecting and disposing of refuse.

Custodial Services aims to contribute to campus sustainability goals. We ask that the campus community join us in this effort by being mindful of waste in product usage and garbage generated.

Custodial Services supports the University’s goal to reduce costs. In addition to being good stewards of supplies, we must save expenses with the reduction of service where we are able to do so. Biohazards and emergencies will continue to be addressed promptly. Restrooms, entries, and high touch surfaces will continue to be tended to daily. The frequency of tasks such as vacuuming, trash removal, and projects in offices located in Trinity, Kendall, Colusa, Holt, some of Butte, Ayres, and Tribal Relations has been reduced as indicated below.

  • Offices

    Two Times per Week:

    • Empty trash receptacles and replace plastic liners that are torn or obviously soiled
    • Replace light bulbs as needed
    • Spot clean floors as needed

    Weekly Cleaning:

    • Dust mop or sweep non-carpeted floors completely
    • Damp mop non-carpeted floors completely
    • Vacuum carpeted floors completely
    • Spot clean inside/outside of trash receptacles
    • Damp wipe and disinfect contact surfaces such as push plates, door handles, and hand rails
    Annual Cleaning (majority of work done during summer months):
    • All hard surface floors are stripped and waxed
    • Carpets are shampooed using the Hot Water Extraction (HWE) Method
  • Labs/Classrooms

    Daily Cleaning:

    • Empty trash receptacles and replace plastic liners that are torn or obviously soiled
    • Dust mop and sweep non-carpet floors completely
    • Clean aisles and seating areas
    • Replace light bulbs as needed
    • Clean chalk board trays as needed
    • FMS does not clean chalkboards or whiteboards. FMS does not provide towels for departmental or lab use
    • Spot clean floors as needed
    • Spot vacuum carpet as needed

    Weekly Cleaning:

    • Wet mop classroom completely
    • Spot clean inside/outside of trash receptacles
    • Vacuum entire carpeted classroom completely
    • Remove carpet stains
    • Wipe down desks, chairs, and tables
    • Damp wipe and disinfect contact surfaces such as push plates, door handles, and hand rails
    Annual Cleaning (majority of work done during summer months):
    • All hard surface floors are stripped and waxed
    • Carpets are shampooed using Hot Water Extraction (HWE) Method
  • Restrooms

    Daily Restroom Care:

    • Flush toilets and urinals, check for stoppage
    • Remove trash, empty sanitary napkin receptacles and replace paper bags
    • Replenish supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and toilet seat covers)
    • Dust (with a damp cloth or sponge) tops of mirror frames, top edge of tiles, top of toilet stall partitions, all containers, lights, vents, and shelves
    • Spot clean doors, walls, partitions, and waste receptacles
    • Clean and disinfect sink basins, clean and polish chrome, clean mirrors
    • Clean toilets and urinals including underneath, sides, edges and urinal throats with a disinfectant solution. Use bowl cleaner only on the inside of toilet and urinals
    • Clean and disinfect tile around and behind sinks, toilets, and urinals
    • Check lights and change burned out lights as needed
    • Wet mop floor, remove all scuff marks, and clean in corners
    • At least three (3) times a week, pour at least one (1) gallon of clean water, not mop water, down the floor drain to prevent sewer gas odor
    Annual Cleaning (majority of work done during  summer months):
    • Generally, most hard surface floors are stripped and waxed
    • Carpets are shampooed using Hot Water Extraction (HWE) Method
  • Building/Common Areas

    Two Times per Week:

    • Mop floors in hallways and corridors. 
    • Vacuum all carpeted floors including lobby and entrance mats.
    • Clean elevator floors and tracks.
    • Disinfect interior elevator walls and control panel.
    • Clean conference rooms.
    • Clean kitchen area counters and sinks and sweep and mop floors.
    • Mop tile floors.
    • Clean drinking fountains and disinfect .

    Weekly Cleaning:

    • High-speed buffing and burnishing of floors in the main thoroughfare hallways and corridors.
    • Clean the carpets in the main thoroughfare hallways and corridors.

    Semi-Monthly Cleaning:

    • Sweep, mop, disinfect handrails, wipe down horizontal surfaces, and spot clean walls in stairwell areas.
    • Replace burned out bulbs and tubes in the stairwell areas.

    Annual Cleaning:

    • Generally, most hard surface floors are stripped and waxed.
    • Carpets are shampooed using Hot Water Extraction (HWE) Method.
